The Bishnoi villagers of the village of Khejarli prevented the king of Jodhpur from felling the khejri trees.
Amrita Devi, a female villager, decided to take a stand by hugging a tree and encouraging other fellow villagers to do the same to protect the trees.
They proclaimed to the king's soldiers that if they had to cut down the trees, they would have to kill them also, since each of them was hugging a tree.
The soldiers, carried on with the task, killing hundreds of villagers, before the news reached the king.
On hearing about the incident, the king went to the village at once, stopping the soldiers, and then declared the Bishnoi state as a protected area.
