Back Bay Reclamation Company, won the right to claim the western foreshore of Bombay in 1864.

As the population was rising in Bombay speedily, the governor of Bombay, William Hornby approved land reclamation in 1784. Various companys were formed for the purpose of reclamation of land. Likewise Back bay Reclamation was formed with the purpose of reclaiming whole of Backbay. In 1864, the Company won the right to reclaim the Western foreshore from the tip of Malabar hill to the end of Colaba.
