The components constituting the disk service time are Seek time, rotational latency and data transfer rate.

The large percentage of the disk service time in a random I/o operation is constituted by seek time.

    (1) Seek Time :

  • Disk drive takes time to locate the area on the disk where the data which is to be read, needs to be stored.
  • Seek time takes most of the disk service time.

    (2) Rotational latency:

  • It also known as rotational delay, is the delay in waiting for the disk to rotate and to bring the required disk sector under the read-write head.

    (3) Data transfer rate :

  • It is the amount of the data that is transferred from one point to other in a given amount of time.
