- In presence of a base, two molecules of aldehyde combine together to form β-hydroxyaldehyde. The product is called aldol and reaction as aldol condensation.
- The reaction occurs by nucleophilic addition.
- When sodium hydroxide is added to ethanal, 3-hydroxybutanal is formed.
2CH3-CHO ---> CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-CHO
