No country is truly secular as the dictionary definition of the word. At the max they are super tolerant as long as their majority religion is not in danger or is meddled with.

Secularism in the western world means that people of other faiths are allowed their ways as long as they do not interfere in the social life and have an impact on the majority religion of the land.

Even the countries which coined these terms and hold it as a yardstick to measure the social construct of other countries and command them to be secular are NOT secular themselves as they are a religious majority and take pride in that too.

In the American context, is it really secular when the Presidents have to establish a church going devout christian image to gain popularity and a the end of it all take oath on the Bible, unlike India where the PM and President take oath in the name of the country’s constitution.

So American or otherwise, Secularism today is a tool to measure others by and not self.

hop it helps
