flashlight, (US) torch, or torchlight (UK) is a portable hand-held electric light. Formerly, the light source typically was a miniature incandescent light bulb but these have been displaced by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) since the mid-2000s. A typical flashlight consists of the light source mounted in a reflector, a transparent cover (sometimes combined with a lens) to protect the light source and reflector, a battery, and a switch, all enclosed in a case.

The invention of the dry cell and miniature incandescent electric lamps made the first battery-powered flashlights possible around 1899.

White Eye.

White Eye condition created by the flashlight from camera.

  • The light source used in the majority of flashlights is either an LED or an incandescent light bulb with a tungsten filament. The tungsten filament or LED lights when power passes across it, creating observable light.
  • Outdoors, in locations without consistently established lighting, during power outages, or whenever a portable light source is required, flashlights are utilised as a source of light. Numerous variations have been created in addition to the standard hand-held flashlight for specific purposes.
  • The built-in flash can be used for a variety of purposes, including filling in shadows and backlit subjects as well as adding a catchlight to the subject's eyes when there is insufficient natural light. See "Optional Flash Units" for more information on how to use them (0 Optional Flash Units).
  • Light refracting off the retina at the back of your eyes is what causes red eye. When a flash is employed, it typically occurs in dim lighting. Because the strong light flashes so quickly, the eyes can't adjust and constrict the pupil, allowing less light to enter the eye.
