Arragon immediately leaves Belmont for good after choosing the wrong casket fulfilling one of the conditions laid in the oath explicitly .

Explanation:

  • A most striking feature of one of the most popular Shakespearean plays, The Merchant of Venice, is the casket scene.
  • Portia, the beautiful young lady of Belmont had been left with a lot of wealth by her dead father. But she did not have any choice to select her husband.
  • Instead, her father laid a lottery. Every suitor was to inspect a group of three caskets made of gold, silver and lead respectively. Each bore an inscription, judging which the suitor had to open a casket of his choice. If it contained the picture of Portia he would be her husband.
  • There were certain conditions associated with these three caskets. Once one opted a casket who could not share its secret with any one else, he could not reveal to anyone which casket he had chosen, he had to leave Belmont immediately, and he could never woo or marry any woman in future.
  • Arragon was a Spanish prince. He was one of the suitors of Portia. As his name suggests he was arrogant and conceited.
  • He rejected the lead casket as he felt it was unworthy, he also rejected the gold because he did not like its inscription that read 'what many men desire'. He felt himself far superior to the common spirits.
  • He chose the silver and that spelt his doom. He immediately left the place as explicitly stated in the oath.
