When the poet saw the snake drinking water, he admired and liked him. He felt honoured seeing him, he wanted to treat him as a guest but at the same time the voices of modern education and civilisation urged him to kill the snake as it may be poisonous and he threw a stick at him. This behaviour troubled the narrator.
