The Constitutional Amendment Act was passed in 1993 and the state governments were then required to enact revised Panchayati Raj Acts as per the provisions of the amended constitution. The constitution now provides that every PRI shall continue for a period of five years

The 73rd Amendment to the Constitution enacted in 1992 added a new part-IX to the Constitution. It also added a new XI schedule containing list of 29 functional items for Panchyats and made statutory provisions for the establishment, empowerment and functioning of Panchayati Raj institutions.
