To answer this question it is better first to have some sort of idea what makes a country a superpower in the first place. It is easy to say that if it's based on a big population etc, but it has to be much more than that or China would have been the world superpower without interruption for last thousand years with perhaps Russia having second place for most of time.
Instead, when we look the likes of Athens, Rome, Mongolia and the UK share the status with Russia and the USA. So why? The first thing I would mention is a flexable political system. To be a superpower, you need to be able to go with the times, of you have to rigid a system it will crack when put under pressure. Secondly you need an energetic, educated and preferably young population that can drive your state forward. Thirdly you need access to resources, it off no surprise that the likes of Spain and the UK only became superpowers after expanding into the new world, before that they lacked the resources needed to claim the title. Next comes a strong military that can keep invaders out and make those who would act against you to think twice. Lastly you need a technological edge, you need to be able to trade at an advantage throughout the world.
The USA has held superpower status since the second world war when it overtook the UK. It was joined for a time by the Soviet Union. The long-term future is however uncertain. The US is saddled with an aging population, a high debt fuelled by overspending that shows no sign of stopping. A military that while still strong, has lost the ability to frighten the rest of the world. In technological terms, it is still strong but is just holding on to world leader status. This is a superpower that not yet given up, but is showing signs of weakening.
So who are the contenders? Europe suffers from many of the issues afflicting the US so is not likely to put forward a challenger.
Africa has so many internal issues that even with good leadership they will need time to come to the fore.
This leaves Asia and South America as the possible sources. From here, Japan can be ruled out for the same reason as Europe. The following are however possibilities, this is not an exhaustive list:
Russia
China
Brazil
India
Indonesia
Each has its strong points and have access to the resources that would make it possible. For my money, India is the strongest single contender closely followed by China. I would say however that the chances that we will have one country as dominant as the US in the near future is remote. Much more likely we will have a power struggle between various of the contenders that will take time to resolve.
I don't know if this week make the world better, it will certainly make it more unpredictable, and I suspect the term better will apply to some areas and worse to others.
