What is Democracy?
- Democracy is a type of government in which the people have the power to consider and decide on laws, or to elect governing authorities to do so.
- However, the basic idea of democracy is generally acknowledged to have originated in Athens in the 5th century BC.
- Webster's New Encyclopedic Dictionary (1995) defines democracy as "a government where the highest authority is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through representation."
