Boris Johnson called PM Modi and regretted that he would have to cancel his visit to India because of the serious coronavirus related situation in the UK, sources told India Today TV.
The decision to cancel the visit came a day after Boris Johnson announced a new stay-at-home lockdown for the United Kingdom as his medical chiefs warned that the country's medical infrastructure was under threat of being overwhelmed by the rising infection rates.
"In light of the national lockdown announced last night, and the speed at which the new coronavirus variant is spreading, the Prime Minister said that it was important for him to remain in the UK so he can focus on the domestic response to the virus,” a Downing Street spokesperson said.
Johnson has indicated that his India visit would take place during the first half of this year and before the G7 summit presided over by the UK, planned for later this year.
The UK recently imposed a nationwide lockdown till mid-February to control the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the country, especially after the emergence of the mutated strain. For the past seven days in a row, the UK has reported over 50,000 new Covid-19 cases daily. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2,713,563.
