Coming to the modern history of the world, since the times the word 'nation' is being used more or less in the same way as it is being used now, I would say, the French Revolution of 1789 inspired many European Nations to follow the path of Democracy atleast to some extent. Throughout the 19th century, democracy in France was overthrown and subsequently restored several times. On the other hand, Britain's journey towards Democracy started much earlier than the 1789 revolution in France. But the progress was very slow. It is only in the late 18th and the 19th centuries, that Britain took significant steps towards reducing the powers of the monarchy and the feudal lords. Across the Atlantic, in the late 18th century, United States adopted a constitution which is very much democratic in nature ( atleast at that point of time). In the 19th century, countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Denmark and a few more have become democratic to a large extent.

Going by a not so rigid definition of Democracy, I would say, the ancient Greek city states were the first sovereign states to follow a democratic (again, democracy in very loose sense) path.
