Japan announced its surrender in World War II, on 15 August 1945. As a result, it was forced to surrender its territories in the South Pacific to the Allied Forces.

All islands held by the Japanese in the Central Pacific Ocean were ceded to the United Nations, which was set up immediately after World War II (October 1945). Similarly, it had to withdraw all its troops from the islands of Papua and New Guinea.
