Jute is called as the golden fibre.
Jute requires the following geographical conditions for its cultivation — (a) WEATHER : A hot and humid climate. (b) TEMPERATURE : It requires high temperature varying from 24°C to 35°C. (c) RAINFALL : Heavy rainfall of 120 to 150 cm in total is necessary. Small amount of pre-monsoon rainfall varying from 25 cm to 55 cm is very useful because it helps in the proper growth of the plant till the arrival of the proper monsoon. Rainfall between 2.5 to 7.5 cm in a month, during the sowing period, is considered to be sufficient. (d) HUMIDITY : 80 to 90% relative humidity during the period of its growth is quite necessary for its growth.
The uses of jute are — (1) To make cloth for wrapping bales of raw cotton (2) To make sacks and coarse cloth (3) To be woven into curtains, chair coverings, carpets, area rugs, hessian cloth (4) Also to be woven for backing for linoleum.
