The military coup by the army, under the leadership of General Pervez Musharraf in 1999,and the removal of the elected Government of Nawaz Sharif put paid to the hopes of democratic governance in Pakistan. After the death of General Zia ul-Haq in 1988 and democratic rule of a decade, Pakistan's polity had raised hopes of the establishment of democracy as a permanent form of governance. This was completely shattered by this coup and the usurping of power by the General.
