Stratus clouds are considered as low level clouds with a uniform base surrounded by layering of horizontal clouds. They propagates a gray layer of cloud which may cause light precipitation in the clouds or little showring rainfall but not much as they are on lower level than other clouds.

There are many kinds of stratus clouds found in various regions of the world surrounding the atmosphere but not causing rainfall in the region. Their elevation is about 1200ft above the surface of earth. Generally during winters, these clouds are responsible for fog in the region where humidity is higher comparitively.
