Rain gauge

Rainfall is measured in a rain gauge. There are standard sizes of rain gauge, but the size can vary from country to country and region to region.

Mountainous regions often have heavy rainfall, so large-capacity gauges are needed. These gauges may only be examined infrequently if they are located in sparsely-populated locations.

Over lowland areas, the gauges are smaller and may be examined more frequently (often hourly). Some gauges have a "tipping bucket" that fills with a measured amount of rain. When the bucket reaches that amount, it tips the rain out and records the tip. Measuring the number of tips gives the total rainfall.

Some rainfall radar equipment is also capable of measuring rainfall within about 1km of the radar's location.

Hope it's helpful... ^_^
