Pompe’s Disease:

Explanation:

Pompe’s Disease is a rare genetic disorder that tampers your body’s ability to produce certain proteins that are responsible for breaking down glycogen leading to the storage of an abnormal amount of glycogen in your body. Medically termed as Glycogen Storage Disease Type II, pompe’s disease is found to be more in people from the south-east Asian areas.

Pompe’s disease is classified into three main categories based on the time of onset. The three types of Pompe’s disease are:

Classic Infantile-Onset: This type of Pompe’s disease is usually seen months after the birth of a kid, characterized by symptoms such as myopathy, hypotonia, and an enlarged liver.

Non-Classic Infantile Onset: This type of Pompe’s disease usually starts around one year after birth. It is characterized by delayed muscle motor skills and progressive weakening of muscles. The disease also results in the development of an abnormally large heart too.

Late Onset: Late-onset Pompe’s disease is a kind of disease wherein the symptoms only start showing during the later stages of childhood. Comparatively less lethal than the other two forms, late-onset Pompe’s disease shows symptoms such as progressive muscle weakness and breathing issues.

The accumulation of glycogen in muscle and organ tissues disrupts the normal functioning of these parts causing complications to the person’s overall health.
