The type of cells ( prokaryotic/ eukaryotic ) gives the phylogenetic origins and similarities among different species

The genetic material from the cell also gives information whether they evolved from a common ancestor

But the place or ecosystem gives information regarding the adaptations developed .

Eg aquatic ecosystem is made of plants, protozoans, fish, molluscs , echinoderms, mammals etc
