Answer:

Sports appeal to people on many levels.

You get to watch people do something they are great at (or at least good at). Most things we engage in are not so visual. A great accountant does vital work but it is not discernible to someone who does not intimately understand the profession. The average viewer would have a difficult time distinguishing between a very average mechanic and a brilliant one in most cases. The work of a great winemaker can take months or years to discern and then only by tasting.

Sports provides drama and conflict. The outcome may be presumed but it is never definitively known until the contest is played. Even in a losing effort the loser can often provide a compelling story by making a game closer than expected or a little regarded player having the game of a lifetime.

Sports often appeal to our tribal sense of belonging. A community may be divided on many things but a shared love of the local team provides a uniting thread.

It is a story that plays out within a defined time period or chances or tasks. The drama of a life plays out over decades and of a nation over centuries.

Best of all, for all the energy and passion the stakes are low. When people from Missouri and Kansas entered into armed conflict in the 19th century or the English and French numerous times over history had armed conflict the stakes were life and death. When the University of Missouri and Univeristy of Kansas play or The English national and French national teams or English and French clubs meet echos of the past awake but the stakes are minor and sometimes even the parties shake hands and maybe even share a beer before returning to normal life.
