in first reaction, C is oxidized to CO2 and in the second reaction 2Cr2O72 is reduced to 4Cr.

(i) C is oxidized to C4+

(ii) Cr6+ is reduced to Cr3+

◆ Explanation -

(1) 2CuO + C → 2Cu + CO2

In this reaction, oxidation number of C changes from 0 to +4.

As oxidation no of C increases, C is oxidized from C to C4+.

(2) 16H+ + 2Cr2O72− + C2H5OH → 4Cr3+ + 11H2O + 2CO2

In this reaction, oxidation number of Cr changes from +6 to +3.

As oxidation no of Cr decreases, Cr is reduced from Cr6+ to Cr3+.
