The hydrogen element of the water is used as moderator in the nuclear reactor.

- The nuclear reactor is totally based upon the spontaneous nuclear reactions. (Mainly nuclear fission)

- In this nuclear reactions, large number of high velocity neutrons are produced.

- To control the speed of the neutrons to get a desired rate of nuclear reaction we use water as the moderator substance.

- This moderator substance or water has large hydrogen atoms which collide with the produced neutrons to slow them down.

Heavy water and graphite are used as moderator in nuclear reactor.

Explanation:

  • Heavy water is made from the isotope of hydrogen which is deutarium. Heavy water is used in nuclear reaction because it acts as a moderator as well as a coolant.
  • It is the best accepted moderator in nuclear reaction. Graphite is also used as a moderator in nuclear reaction.
  • Moderators accept the neutrons which are formed by the breakdown of radioactive substance like uranium 237.
  • As a result it prevents the hazardous reaction in a ‘nuclear reactor’.
