Not all d block elements count as transition metals! A transition metal is one which forms one or more stable ions which have incompletely filled d orbitals. On the basis of this definition, scandium and zinc do not count as transition metals - even though they are members of the d block.

hello!

transition elements have following properties.,

  1. show variable oxidation number
  2. have high melting and boiling points
  3. form stable complexes
  4. form paramagnetic compounds
  5. act as good catalysts
  • though d- block elements are also known as transition elements there are some exceptions.
  • mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) are not considered as transition elements as they have completely filled shells in ground and excited state.
