Not all d block elements count as transition metals! A transition metal is one which forms one or more stable ions which have incompletely filled d orbitals. On the basis of this definition, scandium and zinc do not count as transition metals - even though they are members of the d block.

hello!
transition elements have following properties.,
- show variable oxidation number
- have high melting and boiling points
- form stable complexes
- form paramagnetic compounds
- act as good catalysts
- though d- block elements are also known as transition elements there are some exceptions.
- mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) are not considered as transition elements as they have completely filled shells in ground and excited state.
