Petroleum is a liquid hydrocarbon and it releases oxides of carbon like carbon dioxide and carbon mono-oxide when burnt. These are the elements which cause pollution

Petroleum contains sulphur dioxide. when burnt, petroleum releases this chemical into the environment. During the rainy season, this gas combines with rain water to form acidic rain. Carbon dioxide is also released in this process

Therefore petroleum power plants contribute to the pollution of the environment
