BS-IV compliant vehicles were made compulsory from April 1, 2017 while the government had planned to skip the fifth stage and jump to Bharat Stage VI from 2020. The Bharat Stage are standards instituted by the government to regulate emission of air pollutants from motor vehicles. The norms were introduced in 2000.
