Queen Elizabeth I of England is known for ushering in the Golden Age of England, which included many explorations of the Americas. While her predecessor, Queen Mary, did sponsor some explorations, and other rulers after he did also, there were significantly more expeditions completed during Elizabeth's reign from 1558-1603. For example, during her reign, Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe between 1577 to 1580.
