However, the equation of the line in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b) that passes through the given points can be determined by:

a) find the slope of the line using the corrdinates of the twp points provided

( y2 - y1 ) = (-5 - (-17)) = 12 = -6 The slope, m , is -6

( x2 - x1) (1 - 3) -2

b) use the slope of -6 and one point to determine the y-intercept , b, for the line:

I will choose to use (1, -5) but either is acceptable.

y = mx + b

-5 = -6• 1 + b

-5 = -6 + b

b = 1

c) The equation of the line is: y = -6x + 1
