Answer:

With glasnost and perestroika, the Soviet leader Gorbachev began a series of reforms which he hoped would lead to change within a maintained communist system. However it began a process which led to the collapse of post war Europe alignment.

The Soviet Union collapsed and was replaced by, largely, its individual republics; for example, the Baltic states Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Organisations such as The Warsaw Pact and Comecon were dissolved. The Berlin Wall came down and both Germany and Berlin were re-unified.

Communist governments in Eastern Europe were dissolved and new elections were held.

Re-alignment of borders and states took place with Czechoslovakia becoming the Czech Republic and Slovakia and Yugoslavia breaking up into a number of independent states such as Serbia and Croatia, reflecting the different ethnic groups.

Many of these countries looked West and have since joined both NATO and the EU.
