Till Maharaja Ranjit Singh was alive British did not touch Punjab and maintained cordial relations with him Rich province of Punjab was very promising as it would prove to be a rich source of generating revenues for the Company hence after Ranjit singh's death they engaged in a constant tussle with his successors and finally annexed it
