The British tried to annex Indian states by hook or crook (Doctrine of lapse or misrule as they annexed Awadh in 1856. Till Maharaja Ranjit Singh was alive British did not touch Punjab and maintained cordial relations with him Rich province of Punjab was very promising as it would prove to be a rich source of generating revenues for the Company hence after Ranjit singh's death they engaged in a constant tussle with his successors and finally annexed it
