1. Bromine water test

Bromine water test or the saturation test is used to differentiate between an alkane and alkene.

An alkene will react with the bromine water In an addition reaction that takes place only in darkness. The bromine will be decolourised.

An alkane on the other hand will not react in the given conditions and the bromine water will remain orange.

2. Potassium Permanganate Test for Alkenes

KMnO4 is a deep purple  colour . When added to unsaturated  compounds the MnO4   gets  reduced to MnO2 which  forms a brown precipitate.
