1. Bromine water test
Bromine water test or the saturation test is used to differentiate between an alkane and alkene.
An alkene will react with the bromine water In an addition reaction that takes place only in darkness. The bromine will be decolourised.
An alkane on the other hand will not react in the given conditions and the bromine water will remain orange.
2. Potassium Permanganate Test for Alkenes
KMnO4 is a deep purple colour . When added to unsaturated compounds the MnO4 gets reduced to MnO2 which forms a brown precipitate.
