Answer:

San Andreas Fault is the correct answer.

Explanation:

Earth's outer crust (lithosphere) consists of a series of tectonic plates that move over layers of a hot, flowing mantle called the asthenosphere. Heat within the asthenosphere causes convection, causing the tectonic plates to move relative to each other several centimeters per year. A "plate boundary" is shaped while tectonic plates collide. There are mainly three types of plate boundaries, each associated with the formation of different geological features.

  • When two tectonic plates collide, they form a converging plate boundary. Usually, one of the converging plates moves under the other. This is a process known as subduction.
  • Deep oceanic trenches are a frequent feature where tectonic plates are subducting, and earthquakes are also common in subduction zones. As the subducting plate moves deeper into the mantle, the liquid is released from the rocks, partially melting the overlying mantle. New magma (lava) rises and erupts violently to form volcanoes, often forming island arcs along converging boundaries.
  • When two plates move apart, this is called a diverging plate boundary. Along these boundaries, magma rises from deep within the Earth and erupts to form a new crust on top of the lithosphere. Most diverging plate boundaries are underwater, forming submarine mountain ranges called ocean-spreading ridges.
  • Although the forming process of these mountain ranges is volcanic, volcanoes and earthquakes are not as intense along oceanic ally extending ridges as they are along converging plate boundaries.
  • The third type of plate boundary occurs where tectonic plates move horizontally to each other. This is known as the transformation plate boundary. As the plates rub against each other, the high stresses can cause parts of the rock to crack, causing earthquakes. The points at which these breaks occur are called errors. A famous illustration of a transform plate boundary is the San Andreas Fault in California.
