Silk cocoons are then soaked in boiling water to soften the sericin that is holding the silk in a cocoon shape, making it possible to unravel the silk fibers of the whole cocoon as one continuous thread. These threads are very fragile and thin so 3 to 10 threads are spun together to form a single thread of silk.
