Simile

Simile is a direct comparison between two different things using ‘as’ or ‘like’.

Figure of speech is used by poets for rehtorical or vivid effect. This poem though simple is a classic and makes use of some of the very common figure of speech, like, personification, simile and alliteration.

Throughout the poem personification is heavily used.

In the 1st line simile “I wandered lonely as a cloud”, here the poet makes a direct comparison between him and a cloud.

5th line “Beside the lake, beneath the trees”, alliteration is used here. There is repetition of the sound “bI”(phonetic symbol for the pronunciation of B in ‘beside’ and ‘beneath’).

6th line “Fluttering and dancing in the breeze”, personification is used here as the daffodils are said to be dancing in the breeze , they referred to as a person.

7th line “Continuous as the stars that shine”, simile again, daffodils are compared to stars directly.

12th line “Tossing their heads in sprightly dance”, use of personification again.

13th and 14th “The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee”personification once again.
