There are four types of forces which work upon an aeroplane taking off in the air. They are thrust, drag, weight and lift.

Thrust is the force which helps the aeroplane move in the direction of motion. Drag is the force which is exerted in the direction opposite to that of motion. It is used to slow down the object.

Weight is the force applied by the gravity and lift is the force which is responsible for holding the aeroplane in the air. This force is mostly used by wings.
