Fossil fuels r used in Thermal power plants. Basically coal is used in the heat production for creating steam to generate electricity out of Turbine.
Bitumunous or Anthracite is largely used to generate maximum heat and India is blessed with Bitumunous coal reserves.
The general problem is the pollution caused due to the smoke released during the burning of coal.
Harmful gases like Nitrous oxide, Sulfur dioxide, Carbon monoxide, etc. gases are released which cause air pollution and indeed water pollution through acid rain.
Also heavy metals like mercury and lead are present in the coal and due to the combustion, the oxides mercury and lead get mixed with water resources and cause harmful diseases like Cancer to humans.
