There are many functional groups which always occur in the terminal position of a carbon chain such as:

aldehydic group -CHO
acyl chloride group -COCl
carboxylic acid group -COOH
amide group -CONH2

Usually carboxylic acids -COOH are given more preference than all the other functional groups
Then comes sulphonic acid -SO3Hand so on
