Archaeological survey of India is attached to the Ministry of Culture that is responsible for archaeological research and the conservation and preservation of cultural monuments in the country. It was founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham who also became its first Director-General. ASI plays a significant role in conservation of monuments .ASI which has a colonial origin was given legislative structure during Lord Curzon tenure in 1904. Its main functions include
1) Conservation, developing and maintaining archaeological gardens, chemical preservation of monuments and antiquities.
2) Recording and editing of inscriptions
3) Promotion of specialized studies
4) Architectural survey
Role played by ASI :
1)Decipher :Played a role in deciphering scripts like Bramhi by James Princep which depicted Ashokan life , before that Ashoka was considered to be a small ruler.
2)Finding new sites : John Marshall along with many others helped in finding Harappan sites
3)After independence : There are various projects taken by ASI nationally and internationally to protect architecture example being Ta Prohm, Cambodia , reason for decline of Harappa being one of important projects.
It is due to role of ASI that 29 sites are part of UNESCO world heritage sites .
Despite such remarkable work there are many sites which are under threat despite stringent laws . But a recent proposal of Ministry of culture regarding amendment of Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2010 would further endanger their protection . It will promote construction in the vicinity of preserved memorials leading to heavy vibrations, chemical effects or mechanical stresses. One example cited in this regard relates to the construction of an elevated road next to Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra to “reduce road accidents” and “for organised traffic movement”.
