What sports can deaf people play professionally?
You’d be surprised at how well deaf people can play professionally. A very recent story is how a deaf tennis player was hoping to play at Wimbledon 2018: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tenn...
The hard part I experience is for the clubs and teams to give the deaf people a chance to perform. Sure, there might be times where things will need to be adjusted a little bit, but you’d do that for anyone who needs advice on how to get better or to find ways to make things easier for them.
And that applies to those who are deaf too.
For example, when I was a swimmer, there was another swimmer who was profoundly deaf but still swam in major competitions. Before the race started, he depended on hand movements from the race umpires instead of whistles or buzzers so that he knows when to dive in the pool.
Another time is when I used to do Jiu-Jitsu, I didn’t have the right support and ended up being criticised or singled out several times. Needless to say, I didn’t continue it.
The problem is not about which sports. The problem is whether the people behind the sport will give them an opportunity.
But if you give them the platform to do it, you’d be surprised.
As Judy Murrary, the tennish coach and Andy Murray’s mother, said in the article I shared above: “Disability is not about what you can't do, but what you can do.”
