Solid carbon dioxide is called dry ice because it resembles ice, but does not melt. If you freeze water and warm it up it changes from a solid to a liquid (it melts). However, if you take frozen, solid Carbon Dioxide and warm it it will not melt, it will turn directly into a gas. Thus as no liquid forms as it is heated it is called dry ice.
