The main constituent of bleaching powder is calcium oxychloride (C a O C l 2 ). So when it reacts with water, hydrochloric acid is released and smell which comes if of chlorine. Bleaching powder is a yellowish white powder which gives a strong smell of chlorine. Bleaching powder is soluble in cold water.  When bleaching powder reacts with water the following reaction takes place. Ca(OC)Cl + H2O = Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 and chlorine gas is evolved and bleaching powder is soluble in cold water only or react able with cold water properly.
