The Direct Tax which lead to protests and rioting in Britain, was the Poll Tax or the Head Tax. It was levied on each and every individual or head.

Poll Tax was introduced by the government of Margaret Thatcher in place of the existing Domestic Rates, which was unpopular among Conservatives. Domestic rates were levied on houses and not individuals.
