Bal Gangdar Tilak or Lokmanya was the great patroit and freedom fighter who started the Ganesh Chatruthi in India in 1894. He was the freedom fighter who gave the slogan " freedom is my birth right and I shall have it".

He started the Ganesh Chatruthi and used it as an instrument to spread the massage of swaraj and include more and more people to the nationalist movement and for freedom of India.

So this festival was celebrated with great valour and enthusiasm. He also celebrated Shivaji festival for the same purpose as well.

According to the source Ganesh Chathurthi was said to became a grand social even and gathering under the sponsorship of Maharajah Chatrapathi Sivaji. It is unclear when the sponsorship of Maharajah began for Ganesha Chathurthi.

Later, many of the social gatherings have been banned by the British Government in order to prevent revolts against the government. The culture of Ganesha Chathurthi gather was brought back again after the appeal of Lokmanya Tilak, an Indian freedom fighter.
