The elements in which all the energy levels are completely filled i.e. stable electronic configuration are called noble gases. At present only six elements of the type noble gases are there and are placed in the group 18. The noble gases are :
- Helium (He)
- Neon (Ne)
- Argon (Ar)
- Krypton (Kr)
- Xenon (Xe)
- Radon (Ra)
All the elements possess electronic configuration of the type ns² np⁶ except helium which has electronic configuration of the type 1s². Due to stable electronic configuration, noble gases does not have the tendency to lose or gain electrons. So, this elements does not take part in chemical reactions. Hence the name 'noble gases'.
