Andaman and Nicobar Islands were severely affected by the tsunami in 2004. The islands were not only devastated by the tsunami, but also by the earthquake and several aftershocks that occurred near the near the islands in the following days. The death toll from the tsunami in the islands is believed to be around 2000. accounting for a large percentage of India's total casualties. According to an official report, one in five people living on the islands had been injured or killed by the tsunami. The islands of Great Nicobar and Car Nicobar experienced widespread devastation because of their general flatness. Some smaller islands in the Nicobar have completely vanished and many others have changed shape.

Actually, these group of islands are furthur comprised of about 572  islands out of which only 38 islands are where people are living.

As the result of this tsunami about  1400 people were killed while many were the missing .
This tsunami was actually the result of Indian ocean earthquake  which came near the island of "sumatra" due to which tsunami was triggered.
