A nice question indeed. Water has greater density than water. That's why ice floats on water. A question really strikes in mind.We have been taught that at lower temperature a substance has greater density.
Then how come ice has low density?
Let me be clear. Water is an exception to this rule!
Water expands when cooled.
And how does water expand when cooled?
It is due to the hydrogen bonding. This gives water enough space between it's molecules and it expands when it is cooled .Therefore, water is less dense in solid state than in liquid state.
So, we got the reason why ice has less density than water..Interesting isn't it?
