Question

Out of NH3 and NF3 which has higher dipole moment and Why?

Answer

NF3 has higher dipole moment

Firstly,the order of electronegativity here is : F > N > H

It is known that the more electronegative atom attracts the electron cloud towards it.

NH3

Since, the nitrogen atom is more electronegative than the hydrogen atoms. It attracts the electrons

NF3

Flourine being the most electronegative atom attracts the nitrogen atoms towards it.

Thus,in accordance with the above concept. NF3 has higher dipole moment

  • NF3 has a dipole moment of 1.45 D
  • NH3 has a dipole moment of 0.23 D
  • D refers to Debye
