Gd has 7 unpaired electrons in it’s 4f subshell. In it’s ionized state, Gd+3, donates it’s 6s2 and 5d1 electrons for bonding, leaving the 4f shell intact. Tb, normally 4f9 configured, I believe, has a half filled 4f7 shell in the Tb+2 state, leading me to believe it has more unpaired electrons in comparison.
