Paramagnetism is a property of certain materials by which they are weakly attracted in the magnetic field. The presence of unpaired electrons in the materials forms an internal magnetic field by alignment of electrons in accordance with the externally applied magnetic field.

The magnitude of paramagnetism is determined by determining its magnetic moment (∪, greek letter-mu), which in turn is determined by its number of unpaired electrons present in the ion of the material. Its unit is BM.

Magnetic moment, ∪ = √n(n+2)

Since species are not mentioned here in the question, let us find out which among Cu2+ and Fe2+ has largest paramagnetic moment.

Cu2+ ---> [Ar]18 3d9 ; unpaired electrons: 1

Magnetic moment = √1(1+2) = √3 = 1.73 BM

Fe2+ ---> [Ar]18 3d6 ; unpaired electrons : 4

Magnetic moment = √4(4+2) = √24 = 4.89 BM

Here, as Fe2+> Cu2+ in magnetic moment, it has the

t of the two species.
