Glucagon is called hyperglycemic hormone. Glucagon causes glycogenolysis (i.e. break down of glycogen into glucose) and gluconeogenesis (i.e. synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrates). It also reduces the cellular glucose uptake and utilisation. This results in an increase in the blood glucose level.
